Through the texture of concrete and the softness of memory, this piece captures a view of the beach in Loíza as seen through a white cement window. It’s a moment rooted in connection—a BBQ with my brother, sister, and their chosen family, where I felt completely welcomed, even with my husband and three kids in tow. We swam, laughed, shared good food, good yerba, and even better company.

Though distance, difference, or time may try to separate us, this painting reminds me: we still see each other. We are still in each other’s view. Like the ocean through that window.

Originally a painting I painted over—this piece, like life, became what it was meant to be only after I let go of what no longer served me.
